Baseball Swept By Ursinus

JHU Falls to 3-2 in Centennial Conference Play

GAME ONE
• Score: JHU – 8, Ursinus - 11
• Records: #17 Johns Hopkins (17-6, 3-1 CC) • Ursinus (11-9, 2-2 CC)
• Location: Collegeville, PA • Thomas Field
• Pitching Decision: W – Matt Schmitz (1-0) •  L – Josh Hejka (2-1)
• The Short Story: In a back-and-forth game one, the Johns Hopkins baseball team's comeback attempt fell short as Ursinus scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win game one, 11-8.

How it Happened
• Preston Betz struck out two of the first three Bears batters in the bottom of the first, but with runners on first and second, Ursinus worked back-to-back walks to force in a run, and a two-run single by Carter Usowski put the Bears up 3-0. Betz left the bases loaded as he got a pop-up to end the inning.
• JHU took the lead in the second as Matthew Ritchie singled home AJ King and with the bases loaded, Mike Eberle singled home two runs to tie the game. A sacrifice fly from Nate Davis then gave the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead.
• For the second straight inning, Ursinus sent nine men to the plate, scoring four times to take a 7-4 lead.
• King singled home Davis in the fourth to pull JHU to within two and Ritchie just missed a home run as Alex Mumme crashed into the wall to make the catch and keep the Bears in the lead. Ursinus then added another run in the fifth to go back up by three at 8-5.
• Austin Sacks tied the game with one swing of the bat as his three-run homer to right tied the game at eight in the top of the sixth inning.
• The Bears took the lead in the eighth on a pinch-hit triple by Matt Stanziale to make it 10-8 and a passed ball scored another Bears' run to make it 11-8, and Ursinus would hold the Blue Jays scoreless in the top of the ninth to win game one by a score of 11-8.

Inside the Box Score
• Sacks led the way with three runs batted in while Eberle had a team-leading three hits as he went 3-6 with two RBI.
• King went 2-4 in the game with two runs scored.
• Ben Keever pitched 3.2 solid innings out of the pen for JHU allowing just two hits and one unearned run. He walked one and struck out a team-high six batters.

GAME TWO
• Score: Hopkins – 9, Ursinus - 15
• Records: #17 Johns Hopkins (17-7, 3-2 CC) • Ursinus (12-9, 3-2 CC)
• Pitching Decision: W – A.J. Palumbo (3-2) • L – Jaykob Cave-Stevens (0-1)
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins baseball team once again lost a tough game to Ursinus as the Blue Jays rallied to tie the game, however, the Bears pulled away to win game two, 15-9

How it Happened
• JHU jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Ritchie, who reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on an Eberle double, scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
• The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the second taking advantage of two Hopkins errors in the inning and added two more runs in the third and the fourth innings to go up 6-1.
• In the fifth, Hopkins cut the Ursinus lead in half as Eberle singled home Tim Kutcher to make it 6-2 and a sacrifice fly by DeGiacomo scored Ritchie to make it a 6-3 game.
• Ursinus responded in the bottom of the fifth, once again taking advantage of another JHU error as Tom Jacobs doubled home Jerry Scavone, who reached on an error, to make it a 7-3 game.
• A four-run top of the sixth for Hopkins tied the ball game at seven. Kutcher and Ritchie both worked walks with the bases loaded and an Eberle sacrifice fly brought JHU to within one at 7-6. DeGiacomo then tied the game with a single to right to score Kutcher and make it a 7-7 contest.
• The Bears answered right back with a five-run bottom of the inning to take a 12-7 advantage.
• A sacrifice fly by Eberle and a run-scoring double by DeGiacomo in the eighth pulled JHU to within three, however, Ursinus tacked on three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 15-9 lead and they held on to take game two by that score and complete the sweep.

Inside the Box Score
• Kutcher, Eberle and DeGiacomo all notched two hits in the game and Eberle and DeGiacomo each added three RBI in game two.
• Eberle and DeGiacomo are now tied for the team lead with 20 RBIs each.
