Volleyball Downed by Diplomats

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus College volleyball team was handed a 3-0 Centennial Conference defeat by visiting Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.

A pair of players racked up 10 kills apiece for the Diplomats (8-4, 1-0), who hit .419 for the afternoon and served 11 aces.

F&M put a damper on the match with a quick 11-2 run to open the first set. The Bears (3-6, 0-1) battled back to 18-11 thanks to a Caroline Sherman kill but were unable to draw any closer and succumbed to a 25-14 tally.

Ursinus fell behind 8-3 in the second frame but closed to within 10-8 before the Diplomats succeeded in keeping the home side at arm's length on the way to a 25-18 score.

The Bears hit .412 in the third set, posting nine kills against just two errors, but F&M was even more efficient in pounding 14 kills and registering a .600 kill percentage on 20 attack attempts.

Katie Cressman led Ursinus with seven kills, while Sherman added four and Haley Spotts had three. Rachel Bernard (15) and Emma Illovsky (eight) led the Bears in assists and digs, respectively, and Sherman notched a pair of aces.

The volleyball team heads to Immaculata for a non-conference match on Wednesday.
