Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

AVCA Release

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Ursinus College volleyball team earned a Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for the fourth consecutive season.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average. The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored.

"Even though teams might not have played during their usual season or may not have competed at all during the past year, coaches still found ways to lead their players to academic excellence," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "This is a testament to the important role volleyball coaches play in their players success both on and off the court."

The volleyball team turned in a spectacular spring semester in the classroom, achieving a 3.61 cumulative GPA. Eleven of fifteen team members recorded at least a 3.40, and six earned a 3.75 or better, highlighted by a perfect 4.0 from rising sophomore Haley Spotts.

The Bears had four players named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor roll last fall – 2021 graduates Paige DeAlba and Grace Sullivan, rising senior Kaitlyn McGinley, and rising junior Luca Walborn – and figure to place even more on the prestigious list after the next semester.
