Volleyball Sweeps Owls in Season Finale

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team ended the 2017 season on strong note, picking up its first Centennial Conference victory – and a big milestone for senior Allison Raff – in a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 27-25, 25-14) of Bryn Mawr on Saturday.

Raff made her last match one she'll never forget, registering the 1,000th dig of her career in the second set and leading all players with 13 kills for the Bears (7-18, 1-9).

Senior Taylor McCartney put up six kills and six digs in her last match as a Bear. Sophomore Kelly Piotrowicz finished with 31 assists, seven kills (on just nine attempts), and five digs, while junior Sydney Gonzalez and freshman Grace Sullivan each had three aces.

The Bears trailed 6-2 right out of the gate, but rebounded with two aces from Gonzalez, two kills by Raff, and another from Piotrowicz to cap a 10-1 spurt. The Owls (1-22, 0-10) led just 13-12 before sophomore Grace LaDelfa keyed a 6-0 run with three kills to help Ursinus hold on for a 25-19 victory.

Ursinus dug itself into and out of a 16-9 hole in the second set. The Bears were down 21-16 and 23-21 before kills by Piotrowicz and sophomore Miranda Foster evened the score. Ursinus misfired on two set points before Raff's back-to-back kills supplied a 27-25 decision.

Raff's 1,000th dig came late in the frame, making her the first Bear since Leah Masiello '15 to reach that milestone. She finished her career with 935 kills.

The Bears were behind 4-0 in the third set, but quickly rattled off five points in a row and never trailed again. Raff, fittingly, closed the season – and her career – with an ace.
