Volleyball wins two on Day two of Moravian Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa.  – Rebounding from two opening day losses, the Ursinus College volleyball team won the Silver Bracket of the 2015 Greyhound Premiere Classic by defeating both Marywood and Alvernia by 3-1 scores on Saturday morning, improving to 2-2.

In the Marywood match (won by set scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-15), Ursinus got 14 kills from sophomore outside hitter Allison Raff (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) and 11 from senior outside hitter Karla Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins). Junior middle blocker Sam Murphy (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) and freshman outside hitter Megan Gombatz (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) each had seven kills for the Bears.

Freshman Cori Cichowicz (King of Prussia, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) dished out 23 assists, with junior setter Emily van Mulbregt (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) getting 22.

Defensively, Raff had 25 digs, with Thiele netting 15. Cichowicz and freshman libero Sydney Gonzalez (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) each had 12 digs in the win.

Against Alvernia (won by set scores of 25-22, 26-24, 20-25, 25-20), Ursinus got 13 kills from Raff and 12 from Thiele. Cichowicz had 24 assists, with van Mulbregt getting 18.

Gonzalez and van Mulbregt each had three service aces.

Defensively, Raff had 19 digs with Thiele and Gonzalez each getting 11.

Thiele was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts. 

Ursinus hosts Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday.
