Volleyball splits opening tri-match

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – In a six-hour day that featured three matches, fans got their money's worth in lid-lifter as Ursinus dropped a 3-2 decision to Gettysburg (11-14, 1-0 Centennial) Saturday afternoon. The Bears won the second and fourth sets, before falling in the fifth set by a 15-11 count. The Bears led 10-5 at one point before the Bullets rallied.

In the third match of the day, Ursinus blanked Manhattanville, 3-0, to move to 8-4 overall. The middle match saw Gettysburg also blank the Valients (7-7) 3-0. Set scores in the middle match were 25-14, 25-10 and 25-16.

In the opening match, Ursinus dropped the opening set 25-22, then rallied to win set number two by a 25-20 score. The third set was a back-and-fourth affair, with the Bullets finally pulling away after a timeout with the score 16-all. Gettysburg outscored the Bears 9-4 in the portion of the third set.

In the fourth set, broke open a one-point set with a 4-1 rally to take a 21-16 lead and would win the fourth set 25-19.

In the fifth, Ursinus led 10-5 on a service ace by freshman outside hitter Taylor McCartney (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury). Following a Gettysburg timeout, the Bullets went on a 8-0 run to put away the match.

Individually, Ursinus got 16 kills from freshman outside hitter Allison Raff (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) and 15 each from McCartney and junior outside hitter Karla Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins Senior).

Senior setter Gina Powers (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) had 49 assists, a match-high. Senior libero Leah Masiello (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth's) had 25 digs, with Thiele and Powers each having 13.

For Gettysburg, junior middle hitter Courtney Morrow had a match-high 22 kills with just two attack errors on 32 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Dallman had six solo blocks.

In the Manhattanville match, Ursinus won by set scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-19.

Powers led the way with eight kills, as Raff had seven. Powers went for 14 assists and seven digs. The Bears had 14 service aces in the match, as McCartney had four and sophomore setter Emily van Mulbregt had three.

Ursinus embarks on a three-match road trip, starting Tuesday at Immaculata.
