Volleyball goes 3-1 at Moravian Tournament

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second straight season, the Ursinus College volleyball team had a strong start to their season as the Greyhound Premiere Classic, going 3-1 in two days of competition.

The Bears (3-1), playing under new head coach Joe Groff, defeated Alvernia 3-2 and Wesley 3-0 on Friday, before falling to Wilkes 3-1 on Saturday morning. They finished Saturday with a 3-2 win over Centenary (N.J.)

Sophomore setter Gina Powers (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) was named to the all-tournament team for her performance over the weekend.

Against Alvernia, Ursinus won by scores of 25-15, 16-25, 25-18 and 18-15.

Senior middle blocker Kristin Hanratty (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) led the team with 16 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Doyle (Troy, N.Y./Tamarc) and junior middle blocker Anahi McIntyre (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) each had seven.

Powers had 32 assists, while sophomore libero Leah Masiello (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth's) had 23 digs. Mara Berzins and Hanratty each had three blocks.

Against Wesley, Hanratty had seven kills, with Powers scooping up seven assists.

Set scores against the Wolverines were 25-17, 25-15, 25-22.

In the Wilkes match, Ursinus lost by scores of 25-22, 20-25, 28-26 and 25-18. Hanratty had nine kills, with McIntyre netting seven. Powers had 23 assists, with Masiello going for 27 digs with Powers with 21.

Finally, Ursinus won the marathon match against Centenary College by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23 and 15-7.

Hanratty had 14 kills, with McIntyre with ten. Powers had 35 assists, with Masiello going for 28 digs and Hanratty with 15. Hanratty also had four solo blocks.

Ursinus hosts Widener on Tuesday.
