Volleyball falls to Bryn Mawr in tight match, 3-2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Tied at two sets each, Bryn Mawr scored the final seven points of the match as the Owls (7-8, 3-1 Centennial) upended Ursinus (8-7, 0-4 Centennial) 3-2 in volleyball action Thursday night. 

Set scores were 24-26, 25-13, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-9.

For Ursinus, junior Kristin Hanratty (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) had 14 kills, with senior Elizabeth Roth (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) adding in 12. Senior Kim Goldberg (Sarasota, Fla./Out of Door Academy) added in 11 kills.

Freshman setter Gina Powers (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) had 22 assists, with Roth contributing 14. Defensively, freshman libero Leah Masiello (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth's) had 30 digs, which was a match high. The Bears excelled in serving for the second straight match, netting 11 service aces. 

Bryn Mawr was led by senior Mikecia Witherspoon who had 26 kills, with senior Katie Merrill grabbing 24 kills and 22 digs as she accounted for 30 of the Owls' 75 points in the match.

The first set saw Ursinus race out to a 4-0 lead, increasing the advantage to 13-6 on a service ace by junior Kaitlyn Ott.  The lead went all the way up to ten at 17-7, before the Owls rallied to tie the score at 23-all. After Bryn Mawr went up 24-23, Ursinus scored the final three points of the match to take a 26-24 win. 

In the second set, Bryn Mawr led the entire way going up by as much as 12. In the third set, Ursinus rallied from an early deficit to tie the score three times, before taking the lead at 12-11 on a kill from freshman Lindsay Doyle. From there, Ursinus led the rest of the way.

The fourth set was a mirror image of the second, as Bryn Mawr led wire-to-wire.

Ursinus travels to McDaniel on Saturday.
