Volleyball comes up short against Swat, 3-1

SWARTHMORE, PA. – The Ursinus College volleyball team rallied to win the third set 25-20, but, dropped the fourth set as the Bears (7-5, 0-2 Centennial) came up on the short side of a 3-1 decision to Swarthmore (10-2, 1-0 Centennial) Tuesday night.

Set scores were 14-25, 16-25, 25-20 and 8-25.

Ursinus was led by junior middle blocker Kristin Hanratty (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) who had ten kills, with senior outside hitter Kim Goldberg (Sarasota, Fla./Out of Door Academy) adding in eight. Freshman setter Gina Powers (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) paced the Bears with 13 assists with senior setter Elizabeth Roth (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) adding in 11.

Freshman libero Leah Masiello (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth's) had 23 digs with Hanratty adding in 11. Roth also had four block assists, as the Bears netted six team blocks.

In the first set, Ursinus took the lead at 5-4 on an attack error. That served as their only lead of the first set as Swarthmore then outscored the Bears 8-2 to take at 12-6 lead. Ursinus stormed out to a 8-3 lead in the early part of the second set as Hanratty earned four points on four attack errors, with two blocks by Powers, Roth and Erica Dickey. After Swarthmore came back to take the lead, Ursinus got within 18-14 on a kill by Hanratty.

In the third set, Ursinus led most of the way going up by as much as five points several times. The largest lead was at 15-10 on a Swarthmore attack error. Ursinus did hold off a Swarthmore charge, as the Garnet came to within one at 18-17, before a kill from Powers gave the Bears a two-point edge at 19-17.

Ursinus hosts F&M at 11 a.m. on Saturday as part of Homecoming.
