COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Ursinus scored a 3-0 victory over Bryn Mawr
on Tuesday night in a Centennial Conference volleyball match.
The Bears won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-16. In the third
set, the Bears fended off two set points, taking the set and match
28-26.
Ursinus (5-10, 1-3 Centennial) got 13 kills from junior outside
hitter Gabriella Galleo (Reading, Pa./Spring-Ford)
and 11 kills from junior outside hitter Mary Kate Wilmoth
(Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's). Sophomore setter
Elizabeth Roth (York, Pa./Dallastown) had 31
assists, while Galleo had 14 digs. Wilmoth added in 11 digs of her
own, while senior libero Jennifer Fargo (Secaucus,
N.J./Lacoradire Academy) had ten.
For Bryn Mawr (4-8, 0-3 Centennial), sophomore middle blocker
Mikecia Witherspoon had 13 kills, while sophomore middle blocker
Katie Merrill had 11. Sophomore setter Erika Takeuchi-Miller had 25
assists, while senior libero Katie Solook had 12 digs.
In the first set, Ursinus went up 8-1 on a kill by Wilmoth. The
Bears increased the lead to as high as 12-2 on a kill by sophomore
outside hitter Kimberly Goldberg (Sarasota, Fla./Out of
Door Academy), as Bryn Mawr got no closer than five the
rest of the way.
In the second set, Ursinus went up 4-1 to start the set, then
pulled away to a 15-6 lead following an Owl timeout on a setting
error. The third set turned out to be the most exciting of the
night. Facing set point at 24-22, Merrill committed a service error
to put the Bears within one. After tying the score at 24-all, the
Owls got a kill from Witherspoon to again set up set point at
25-24.
However, Witherspoon would commit an attack error, which allowed to
Bears to tie it at 25, then go up 26-25 on a service ace by
Wilmoth.
Bryn Mawr would tie it one last time 26-all, but, Ursinus got two
kills from Galleo to win the match.
Ursinus will host Gettysburg on Saturday
