COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's track and field team kicked off the outdoor season with a solid performance at its home invitational on Saturday.
Junior Morgan Cope's mark of 9-6.25 in the pole vault was enough for first place.
Sophomore Sophia Simoes moved up to second in the conference with a heave of 38-10.25 in the shot put, which placed her in runner-up standing behind Gettysburg's Mikaela Collins. Freshman Shelsea Deravil took ninth at 31-6.00.
Deravil led a trio of Ursinus athletes in the top-8 of the discus, landing in fourth place with a toss of 101-11. Simoes was sixth at an even 95 feet, and junior Mikaela Bordonaro rounded out the place-winners with a mark of 87-7.00. Bordanaro logged a 101-2.00 to finish sixth in the javelin.
Senior Catherine Buczek marked a new personal best in the 400, crossing the line in 1:00.05 to land in second overall, behind only Niasia Harding of UDC at 59.55.
Senior Katherine Damato finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:11.04, good for sixth in the CC.
Buczek and Damato ran on the 4x400-meter relay, along with sophomores Catherine Curran and Auresa Cunningham, and placed second in 4:12.34.
Junior Riley Engel earned a pair of places in the 800 (2:33.17) and the 1500 (5:08.58), finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Junior Audrey Simpson (5:20.61) and senior Lily Talerman (5:20.66) were neck and neck in the 10-11 spots in the 1500.
Freshman Gianna Speranza moved up to fourth on the CC performance list with a 13.27 in the 100-meter dash prelims; she placed sixth with a 13.39 in the final.
Freshman Rachel Coleman's 27.92 was good for ninth in the 200-meter dash and places her eighth in the conference. Speranza was close behind at 28.21.
