Women's Tennis Sweeps Alvernia in Fall Opener

READING, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's tennis team swept all nine matches in their fall opener against Alvernia on Wednesday. The Bears took all nine matches without dropping a set.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Caitlyn Sorelle and Brenna Trkula breezed through their match, winning by the impressive score of 8-0. Cara Freedman and Maddie Russell followed suit, dropping just two games en route to an 8-2 victory. At No. 3, Summer Burkholder and Madisen Harvey came through in a close tiebreaker, pulling ahead 7-3 to win, 8-7.

The Bears carried their momentum into singles play. Sorelle and Trkula lost just one game at No. 1 and No. 3 singles as Sorelle won 6-1, 6-0 and Trkula 6-0, 6-1.

Playing at No. 2, Russell came out firing, winning the first set 6-0 before closing out the match, 6-3, in the second. Leach earned an impressive, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 as well.

At No. 4 and No. 6, Freedman and Burkholder each toughed out close matches. Playing eight-game pro sets, Freedman came through, 7-4, in a tiebreaker to win, 9-8. Burkholder held on to win by a break of serve, 8-6, to complete the 9-0 sweep.
