ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ursinus College women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Wednesday, the penultimate day of competition on its annual trip to Florida.
Freshmen Madisen Harvey and Maddie Sorebo each recorded their first career wins for the Bears (2-2).
Ursinus 6, King's 3
Emily Fernandez won in straight sets at number one singles to put Ursinus in an early hole, but the Bears had no trouble climbing out with five consecutive victories.
Senior Ariel Danziger evened the match with a milestone at fourth singles, taking down Natalie Coffee 6-4, 6-1 for her 40th career singles win; she is the third player in school history to reach that benchmark. Senior Aileen BeVard rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 final over Julia Keppel at number two.
Sorebo and senior Ashley Nguyen each overcame a one-set deficit to claim critical results for Ursinus. Sorebo rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 10-3 defeat of Thea Seasock for her first career win, and Nguyen battled to a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 triumph opposite Emily Kabalka at number three.
Harvey picked up a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win at fifth singles, also the first of her collegiate career.
The Monarchs claimed two of three on the doubles courts, sandwiching wins at one and three around an 8-4 decision in favor of Nguyen and Danziger on the second court.
Ave Maria 5, Ursinus 4
The Gyrenes won two of three third-set super tiebreaks in singles and added another tiebreaker in doubles to eke out the nail-biting win.
Ave Maria won both contested doubles courts, including a 9-8 (4) win at number one. With only five players, the Gyrenes were forced to forfeit third doubles and sixth singles.
Nguyen's 6-4, 6-1 victory at number two singles put Ursinus ahead 3-2, but Ave Maria responded with wins at three and four to regain the upper hand. Sophomore Summer Burkholder kept the Bears' hopes alive, posting a 7-5, 1-6, 10-5 decision at number six.
The match came down to first singles, where the Gyrenes' Amanda Grebosky managed to prevail in a tight 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5 finale.
