May Named Most Outstanding Female Athlete

Swimmer Sophie May has been chosen as the recipient of the Most Outstanding Female Athlete award, the Ursinus College Athletic Department announced Friday. The honor is reserved for the top female student-athlete(s) in the graduating class.

May needed only two seasons of competition to compile the career resume of an all-time great. She racked up seven All-America certificates and 10 Centennial Conference titles over her freshman and sophomore years, also securing five conference and program records along the way.

May burst onto the scene in her first collegiate season, capturing the 50 free in addition to four relays en route to being named the conference championships' most outstanding rookie performer. She went on to place 13th as part of the 200 medley relay at the NCAA Championships, the first All-America relay in program history.

May helped to headline a historic performance at the 2019 CC championships, when she and her teammates established new conference records in four of the five relay events as the Bears captured their sixth consecutive team title. The sophomore proceeded to swim on four more All-America relays at the NCAA championships and added an individual All-America accolade in the 100 free to push her career total to seven, tied for second-most in school history. That year, Ursinus placed 17th in the team standings with 75 points – both the highest in team history.

A captain of the 2020-21 squad and a four-year classroom standout, May is a two-time College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American. She is also a two-time Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll recipient, and the double major in Psychology and French currently owns a 3.69 cumulative GPA.
