Nine Women's Swimmers Named All-CC

All-CC Women's Swimming Team

LANCASTER, Pa. – For the second year in a row, the four-time defending CC champion Ursinus College women's swimming team had nine of its student-athletes garner all-conference recognition, the league office announced Thursday.

Freshmen Haley Sturla (800 free relay) and Grace Emig (200 free relay); sophomores Clara Baker (200/400 free relay, 200/400 medley relay, 100 fly), Kathryn Longenecker (800 free relay), and Peyten Lyons (200/400 free relay, 200/400 medley relay, 100 back, 200 IM); juniors Sydney Gundersen (200/400/800 free relay, 400 medley relay, 100 free), Meggie Leitz (400/800 free relay, 200 fly), and Olivia Tierney (200/400 medley relay); and senior Alexandra Hemp (200 medley relay) all landed first-team honors for their first-place performances. Baker (200 fly), Gundersen (50 free, 200 free), Leitz (100 fly, 100 back), Lyons (200 back), and Tierney (400 IM, 200 breast) also nabbed honorable mention for their various runner-up efforts.

Ursinus head coach Mark Feinberg was named CC Coach of the Year for the sixth straight season.

Leitz, Longenecker, Sturla, and Gundersen won the 800 free relay in 7:44.51 for the Bears, who swept all 10 relay finals – both A and  B – for the first time in program history. Baker, Emig, Gundersen, and Lyons took the 200 free relay (1:36.76); Lyons, Tierney, Baker, and Gundersen captured the 400 medley relay (3:50.97); Lyons, Tierney, Baker, and Hemp broke a school record in the 200 medley relay (1:46.06); and Lyons, Baker, Leitz, and Gundersen claimed gold in the 400 free relay (3:31.86).

Baker won the 100 fly in an NCAA B cut time of 55.55 and placed second in the 200 fly (2:05.54), where she touched the wall behind only Leitz in 2:03.82.

Lyons had a hand in six gold medals and two new program records in the championship meet, winning the 200 IM in a new record time of 2:05.94 and adding another first-place finish in the 100 back (56.96). She placed second in the 200 back, marking a new school benchmark at 2:03.26.

In addition to her four relay golds, Gundersen touched first in the 100 free with a clocking of 52.55 and was runner-up in both the 50 free (24.34) and 200 free (1:54.73).

Leitz had a breakout meet, edging past Baker in the 200 fly in addition to second-place showings in both the 100 fly (56.73) and 100 back (58.09).

Tierney just missed gold in the 200 breast, landing just .14 seconds out of first with a mark of 2:23.23.

Sophomore Katherine Madden was chosen to the All-CC Sportsmanship Team.
