Bullets Take Down Women's Soccer

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team battled Gettysburg into the second half, but two goals by the Bullets gave the visitors a 2-0 Centennial Conference decision.

The Bears (2-4-2, 0-3) had a close opportunity in the 9th minute to get on the scoreboard. A dangerous play by Gettysburg's backline led to back-to-back Ursinus shots. One of the efforts came directly into the keeper from point-blank range off the foot of senior Mackenzie Groff, and the follow-up by freshman Skylar Knapp was blocked wide of the net by the defense.

The match went scoreless until the 56th minute when Gettysburg's Lauren Miesemer put the Bullets up 1-0. Miesemer collected the ball off a deflected pass, turned, and fired in a beautiful 35-yard blast to the top right corner for her fourth marker of the season.

The Bullets (5-2-1, 2-1) increased their lead to 2-0 in the 68th minute when Virginia Sanford took a cross just outside the box then ripped a shot to the lower left side of the net.

In a scoreless first half, each squad registered a close call. Gettysburg's Charlotte Cenatiempo hit the right post from short distance in the 36th minute.

Both squads took five shots in the opening stanza, and the Bears held the Bullets without an official shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Early in the second half, Gettysburg's Brooke Priddy took the corner kick and found Miesemer for a one-timer snatched down by sophomore keeper Sabrina Doherty.

Overall, the Bears took eight shots and the Bullets registered 11. Ursinus put three shots on goal and Gettysburg put five on net. Freshman Rachel Burcaw led the Bears with two shots attempted.

Doherty and Gettysburg's Kerry Sammon had three saves apiece.

The Bears host a non-conference match against Alvernia Wednesday at 7 p.m.
