SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team fell behind early and saw its attack stymied in a 2-0 Centennial Conference setback at No. 20 Swarthmore on Thursday.
Reigning conference player of the year Marin McCoy staked the unbeaten Garnet (6-0-1, 1-0-1) to a lead in the 16th minute, which proved to be enough for a stout defensive unit. Ursinus did not record a shot until the 62nd minute and had only two for the game.
Despite the best efforts of sophomore goalie Sabrina Doherty, the Bears (2-3-2, 0-2) were unable to stem the Swarthmore tide for long. The hosts fired off five shots in the first 13 minutes and change – four of them on frame – and broke through when McCoy collected a pass in the box and finished from close range for her seventh goal of the season.
The Garnet continued to push, hitting the post in the 24th minute before doubling the advantage on Brittany Weiderhold's blast from outside the 18-yard box with four minutes remaining in the first half.
Senior Kasey Sheahan had the first shot of the night for Ursinus, and freshman Skylar Knapp added another in the 85th minute.
Doherty finished with six saves for the Bears, who were outshot 17-2.
Ursinus entertains Gettysburg in a Homecoming showdown on Saturday. First kick is set for 5 p.m.
