Women's Soccer Blanked at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team put forth another tough defensive effort, but host Arcadia scored on a corner kick midway through the first half and shut down the Bears' attack in a 1-0 final.

Neither team manufactured much of anything until the Knights broke the stalemate in the 26th minute, as Veronica Garcia got her head on a corner to the far post. It was the first goal surrendered by Ursinus (1-1-1) this season.

Arcadia (2-0-1) nearly added a second with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but sophomore goalie Sabrina Doherty dove to her right to snare a low shot following a cross from the left flank.

Lightning strikes dotted the sky throughout the first half, ultimately leading to an official weather delay at intermission.

After a wait of around an hour, the teams returned to the pitch for the second stanza. Ursinus managed just one shot after the break, a 53rd-minute effort by sophomore Emma Russell that sailed wide. The Bears had two corners in the last 15 minutes, but neither led to a threat.

The Knights, an NCAA Tournament qualifier each of the past two seasons, held sizeable advantages in shots (13-3) and corners (6-2).

Doherty finished with four saves for Ursinus, which welcomes Penn State Brandywine to Patterson Field for its home opener on Saturday.
