Women's Soccer Plays Fords to Scoreless Draw

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team went the distance in search of its first win of the season, but there were no goals to be found in a 0-0 Centennial Conference draw with visiting Haverford on Wednesday night.

Freshman Sabrina Doherty collected five saves and received a huge lift from her defense in registering the first shutout of her career for Ursinus (0-7-2, 0-3-1).

Haverford (5-3-2, 2-1-1) outshot the Bears 13-7, held a 9-1 advantage in corners, and had the best chances of the evening, but the back of the net eluded the Fords.

The visitors came within a whisker of breaking the stalemate in the 36th minute. Following a corner kick, Grace Mathis had a shot ring off the crossbar, and the rebound effort by Leanne Ludwick was cleared off the line by senior Stephanie DeAngelo, one of two team saves for the Bears on the night; the other had come less than five minutes prior.

Ursinus attempted five shots in the second stanza to the Fords' two, but none troubled Haverford goalie Julie Hanss. Perhaps the best chance came with just under two minutes to go, when freshman Angela Gervasi's bad-angle shot from the right of the box was into the arms of the Fords net minder.

The overtime sessions passed largely without incident, though Haverford did earn three corners in the second extra period.

First-years Julia Ewing and Zoe Tesone had two shots apiece for the Bears, while Mathis topped the Fords with four.

The women's soccer team takes on Franklin & Marshall at home on Saturday.
