Women's Soccer Scores Win over Haverford, 2-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa - Coming into the match undefeated in the Centennial the Ursinus women's soccer team fought through a physical game to come back and defeat Haverford for the second time in nineteen tries 2-1, Wednesday night at Patterson Field.

The last time Ursinus defeated Haverford was in 2003 by the same score 2-1.

After the victory Ursinus improves to 5-4-2 and (3-0-2 CC) currently sitting in fourth place in the Centennial, while Haverford falls to 4-4-2 and 0-3 in conference.

Within the first ten minutes both side had great chances on net thwarted by great defensive play.  On a corner Haverford placed a perfect ball into the center that would been an easy header to the forward, but sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Sullivan punched the prospective cross out of the middle.

The Bears struck next with a corner of their own headed by sophomore midfielder Jeanie Jasinski beating the keeper, but the defender at the post blocked the shot clearing it out of the box.

Haverford struck first coming on a shot from the fifteen, just underneath the crossbar and over the outstretched gloves of the keeper, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The comeback began in the 53rd minute when Valarie Bedrock crossed the ball into the middle of the box and the keeper coming out to clear, but the ball deflected right to Alexis Haug for an open net goal.

In a 1-1 tie game, both teams pressured to take the lead but in the 64th minute, a Haverford foul gave Bedrock a free kick thirty-five yards out.  Bedrocks free kick split the defense finding Haug again, and a soft touch over the keepers head gave Ursinsus a 2-1 victory over Haverford.

Ursinus returns to action at home against Centennial leader Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon.
