GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team finished tied with Gettysburg 1-all in their Centennial Conference first round game, but, Ursinus advanced to the Centennial Conference semifinals by going 5-3 in the penalty kick shootout on Wednesday night at Clark Field.
Sophomore defender Lisa Pan (Herdon, Va./Oakton) kicked the fifth and final PK to send the Bears to the semifinals, which went bottom right past Gettysburg goalkeeper Allie Rivera.
In the shootout, Ursinus made their first shot as sophomore forward Cecilia Mansson (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) gave the Bears a 1-0 advantage. On the second shot in the first round, freshman goalkeeper Kara DiJoseph (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) saved an attempt by Gettysburg's Lauren Johnson.
In the second round, junior defender Monica Oliveto (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) scored for a 2-0 advantage, before Gettysburg cut it to 2-1 as on right side goal by Suzy Englot.
The third round saw junior midfielder Jess Porcelan (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored on a shot for a 3-1 advantage, but, Gettysburg cut it to 3-2 as Casey Attanasio scored on a shot.
The fourth round started with a successful attempt by freshman forward Sarah Cogswell (Shepherstown, W.Va./Jefferson), followed by a goal from Rachel West of Gettysburg to make it 4-3.
In regulation, Gettysburg took an early 1-0 lead as Jordann Smak scored on a shot following a pass from Attanasio at 37:31, before Ursinus answered on a goal from Porcelan at 39:11 on assists from Mansson and junior midfielder Angela Lenzo (Highstown, N.J./Highstown).
Ursinus, outshot 25-10, got eight saves from DiJoseph in the win. Ursinus improved to 3-0 all time in penalty kick shootouts in the Centennial, and advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2007.
