COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus College women's soccer team
opened its 2009 season on a high note on Tuesday afternoon by
defeating Moravian 3-2 in an exciting contest at Wilkes Field.
The Bears (1-0-0) broke open a 1-1 tie at intermission as sophomore
defender Jess Porcelan (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored her second goal of the game
at 51:58 on an header. Junior defender Bridget Winn
(Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) had the assist.
Ursinus built the lead to 3-1 as sophomore forward Katelyn
Miller (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) scored on a cross
from senior midfielder Megan Ascanio (Reading,
Pa./Exeter) at 80:29.
The Greyhounds (0-1-0), who made the NCAA tournament last season,
got within 3-2 on a penalty kick by sophomore midfielder Arielle
Caldas at 87:09.
Moravian took a 1-0 lead at 7:15 when junior midfielder Tara
Alberse scored on a free kick from Caladas. Ursinus tied the score
at 1-all when Porcelan scored her first goal of the game at
26:57 unassisted.
Freshman goalkeeper Justine Harvey (Accident, Md./Northern
Garrett Co.) collected her first collegiate win as she
made three saves on eight shots.
Ursinus will host Manhattanville on Saturday afternoon at 1, in the
beginning a doubleheader with the men.
