Wrestling Goes 2-1 in Senior Day CC Quad

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Jason Carter, Alfred Corradetti, and Romeo Rodriguez each picked up multiple bout wins without a defeat as the Ursinus College wrestling went 2-1 in a Centennial Conference quad match on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears honored Corradetti, Derek Gulotta, Brandon Miller, and Colin Monahan on Senior Day before downing Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins. Merchant Marine ended Ursinus' hopes of a perfect afternoon in the final match of the day.

Carter was 3-0 at 197, while Corradetti went 2-0 at 157 and Rodriguez added two pins at 125 to take his team-leading tally to 12 for the Bears (7-2, 2-2).

Corradetti got the Bears off to a quick start against Gettysburg with a 7-3 victory over Ray Martin, and Gary Nagle extended the lead to 9-3 with a first-period pin of Michael Carioscia at 174.

Kyle Schaffer followed with a 16-0 technical fall over Brendan Loder at 184, and Carter pinned Jon Stix just before the first-period buzzer at 197. A forfeit in the favor of Ben Maack and a first-period fall by Terry Adams at 125 ballooned the Bears' advantage all the way out to 32-3, and Ray Calderaio added to it with a 7-2 defeat of Jake Stein at 133 before the Bullets claimed the final three bouts.

Ursinus had a more difficult time with Johns Hopkins, falling behind 12-8 after four bouts. Jake Folk picked up a 15-0 technical fall at 157 and Nagle edged Joe Paul, 8-7, on riding time advantage at 174, but a pin at 184 had the Blue Jays on top by four.

Carter made up that difference with a 14-3 major decision at 197, and Maack was unopposed again at heavyweight.

Adams extended the margin to ten with a 16-8 major against Brent Lorin before Rodriguez scored his team-leading 11th pin of the season just before the second-period buzzer at 133.

Calderaio's 16-0 tech fall at 133 made it 33-12, and Ursinus conceded the 149-pound bout.

The Bears were denied an unbeaten day by Merchant Marine, who raced out to a 29-3 lead with a bevy of bonus points. Corradetti registered a 10-5 decision at 157, and Carter edged Andrew French, 10-6, at 197.

Maack was a 14-4 major decision victor at heavyweight, and Rodriguez wrapped up the day with a bang, pinning his 125-pound foe in just 40 seconds.

"The team competed well today," head coach Joe Jamison said. "We wrestled great versus Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins, but having some injuries really hurt us against Merchant Marine and that match is a lot closer if we're healthy. However, that can't be an excuse. We gave up way too many bonus points and cannot beat a good team if we give up three pins. We are right there and very close to being a very good team. But if we want to be good, we need to execute in critical positions and minimize damage where we can. We're looking forward to our next opportunity to compete next weekend."

The Bears head to McDaniel next Saturday to take on the Green Terror and Washington and Lee.
