YORK, Pa. – Ben Maack finished fourth in the heavyweight bracket to lead four place-winners for the Ursinus College wrestling team at the New Standard Invitational.
Jason Carter (197) placed fifth, while Terry Adams (125) and Gary Nagle (174) each took sixth for the Bears, who wound up eighth in the team standings with 54 total points.
Maack fell to Johnson & Wales' Michael DiNardo in the quarterfinals, but that was his only blemish on his way to the third-place bout. He pinned teammate Gavin Range in his consolation opener, then picked up a 7-0 decision and a 9-1 major to reach a third-place showdown with Brockport's Richard Knapp, who won by fall in the second period.
Carter used a takedown with 5 seconds remaining to edge TCNJ's Thomas Anderson, 4-2, and move on to the semifinals, where he fell 7-1 to Johnson & Wales' Tommy Wrzesian. Carter dropped a 14-9 decision to York's Cam Farrow to facilitate a rematch with Anderson for fifth place, which the Ursinus grappler won by the same score line.
Nagle scored a major decision and a pin before losing to Cortland's Demitreus Henry with a trip to the third-place match on the line. Nagle was pinned in the fifth-place bout.
Terry Adams suffered his first loss of the season in the 125-pound semifinals, coming up on the short end of a see-saw 7-5 battle with Averett's Samuel Braswell. He lost by a 4-2 count to Justin Lopez pf Johnson & Wales before forfeiting the fifth-place matchup.
Romeo Rodriguez (125), Noah Supsic (157), and Range (285) each won a consolation match on Saturday.
"Overall we had a strong showing this weekend and it shows the progress we've made in a short time," coach Joe Jamison said. "In a field that had five nationally ranked programs, we finished 8th without two of our top starters, who were both seeded. If we were at full strength we're right there knocking on the door for 5th. We have some things to work on of course, but we wrestled well.
In addition to our four place winners, Noah Supsic and Romeo Rodriguez wrestled very well. We have not solidified a starter at 157 yet and Noah made a strong case for himself. Romeo continues to improve and is always in the mix."
