Three Earn NWCA All-Academic Honors

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Three Ursinus College wrestlers earned distinction as members of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III All-Academic Team, the organization announced recently.

Seniors Deon Edmond and Christopher Tan joined freshman Ben Maack in achieving the honor, which requires at least a 3.20 GPA. Wrestlers can be considered if they placed in the top six at their respective regional championship, compiled a win percentage of .500 or better, and competed in at least half of their institution's scheduled contests; they can also garner the accolade with a win percentage of .670 or better while participating in half of the scheduled NCAA events.

An Applied Economics and International Relations double major, Tan placed fifth at 125 pounds at the NCAA Mideast Regional. He finished the regular season with a record of 24-5 and was 47-10 over his final two seasons, including a Centennial Conference championship in 2017.

Maack concluded a terrific rookie campaign with a record of 24-12, leading the team with 11 pins and finishing sixth at regionals. He also won the 184-pound title at the annual Fall Brawl and placed fourth at the CC championship. The freshman is a chemistry major with a minor in biology.

Edmond finished 17-10 at 197 pounds for the Bears, capturing the Will Abele Invitational title and placing third at the conference meet. He is a Health & Exercise Physiology major with minors in biology, education, and wellness education.
