Wrestling Sweeps CC Tri-Match

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team stretched its Centennial Conference dual winning streak to ten with a pair of impressive victories over Johns Hopkins and Washington and Lee on Saturday. Four grapplers went 2-0 on the day for the Bears, who claimed a 34-12 triumph over the Blue Jays and closed with a 37-3 rout of the Generals.

Sophomore Christopher Tan (125) and seniors Alexander Kramer (149), Derek Arnold (157), and Matan Peleg (285) each won two bouts as Ursinus extended its overall winning run to seven matches. Other high points included a pin by junior Deon Edmund and senior Corey Markovitch's dominating victory over last year's CC Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Tan got the Bears started on the right foot, shaking off a bout with illness to post a 5-3 decision over Ricky Cavallo at 125. Tan's takedown with 1:15 remaining gave him enough separation.

After a pin by Christian Vallis at 133 put Johns Hopkins on top, junior Garret Maged used an escape early in the third period to hang on for a 3-2 victory against Lucas Escobar at 141.

Kramer and Arnold followed with quick pins at 149 and 157, respectively. Kramer needed just 40 seconds to dispatch Tommy Grifa, while Arnold took 1:18 to fell the Blue Jays' Alex McLaughlin, last year's CC runner-up at 165.

Sophomore Jarret DiGiontomasso was a 7-1 winner over Dane Morgan at 165 before Markovitch came up with an impressive result at 174. Pitted against Jared Forman, last year's Most Outstanding Wrestler at the CC championship, Markovitch used an immediate takedown and a near fall to pick up six unanswered points in the first period, collecting over two minutes of riding time. Another takedown early in the second made it 8-0 before Forman got one of his own to avoid the shutout.

Edmund pinned Isaac Morales in 1:04 at 184, and Peleg closed the match with a 12-1 rout of Hayden Good in the heavyweight bout, racking up over four minutes of riding time in the process.

Tan rang up 2:53 of riding time and held a 4-0 lead on Ethan Hartman after one period, eventually bumping to a 9-0 major decision on a takedown with just 2 seconds remaining in the bout.

A forfeit at 133 stretched Ursinus' lead to 10-0 before Maged came through at 141 in one of the more entertaining matches of the afternoon. Trailing 1-0 with 1:18 remaining, a reversal gave the Bear grappler the lead, but Michael Dik's escape knotted the bout at 2 with a minute left. A takedown with 15 seconds left gave Maged the go-ahead points, and he added four near fall markers to come away with an 8-2 victory.

Kramer, who came into the day's action fourth in Division III in technical falls, added another to his ledger with a 16-0 whitewashing of Zachary Papin at 149. It was Kramer's eighth technical fall of the season.

At 157, Arnold controlled the proceedings for much of the way against Shane Conners, who was 18-5 on the season. He utilized a quick takedown in the second to go ahead 5-2 on the way to a 9-4 result.

At 184, junior Cody Richmond collected 2:33 of riding time in the first frame en route to a 6-0 decision against Iszak Morgan. Sophomore William McGinley was dominant at 197, employing a takedown and four near fall points to end the first period with 2:48 of riding time and a 6-0 lead. He finished with 4:09 of time and took a 12-0 major decision.

In the final bout of the day, Peleg rode the entire second period, and an immediate escape to start the third was enough to seal a 2-0 victory over Matt Kaminer at heavyweight.

The wrestling team heads to Keystone tomorrow for a non-conference dual.
