Five Named NWCA Scholar All-Americans

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Five Ursinus College wrestlers have been recognized as Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), continuing the program's tradition of success both on the mat and in the classroom.

Seniors Christian Hoogheem and Keven Hoogheem, juniors Alex Kramer and Corey Markovitch, and sophomore Chris Tan were honored by the organization. To be named to the NWCA academic squad, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of at least 3.20 and meet one of the following criteria: Be a national qualifier with a winning record, a regional place-winner with a winning record, or have a season winning percentage of 67.0 percent or better. They must also have competed in at least half of the team's matches.

Christian and Keven Hoogheem were honored for the third straight year, while Tan garnered the award for the second consecutive season. Kramer made the Scholar All-American team as a freshman.

Tan turned in a sensational sophomore season, compiling a record of 27-6 and capturing the 125-pound championship at the NCAA East Regional to earn his first trip to the Division III Championship as the No. 8 seed in his weight class.

Christian Hoogheem was 26-14 at 141, Kramer went 26-5 at 157, and Markovitch finished 15-5 at 174 for the Bears; all three placed fifth at regionals.

Keven Hoogheem finished 29-4 at 133.

Ursinus finished the regular season 15-3 and a perfect 6-0 in Centennial Conference competition. The Bears closed the year on a 15-match winning streak, moving coach Bill Racich into sixth on the all-time NCAA wins list with 514.
