Wrestling fourth at Regionals; Four to compete at Hershey

ROANOKE, Va. – A total of four Ursinus College wrestlers will make the short trip to Hershey in two weeks after their performance at the NCAA East Regionals on Sunday in Virginia.

Sophomore 149 pounder Derek Arnold (Centreville, Va./Westfield), senior 157 pounder Richie Jasinski (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge), senior 197 pounder Daniel Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and sophomore 285 pounder. Sophomore Matan Peleg (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View) will represent the Bears at the NCAA Championships in two weeks.

Arnold and Jasinski both won their respective weight classes, while Manganaro was a runner-up. Peleg finished third in his weight class. Arnold was also named the Outstanding Wrestler in the East Region.

As a team, Ursinus finished fourth with a total team score of 98 points.

Arnold and Jasinski both went a perfect 4-0 in their brackets. Arnold, who is now 35-1 on the year, started with a pin of Benjamin Siegel in the first round in 1:58. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Collin Farley of Centenary (N.J.) by a 14-0 major decision.

In the semifinals, he bested Josh Evans of Wilkes by fall in 6:37, before facing Vincent Fava of Delaware Valley in the finals. In the championship, Arnold trailed after one period 4-2. He got an escape with 1:51 left in the second period to get within one at 4-3, then was awarded one point at the end of the third period for riding time.

In the first overtime, he got a takedown with 47 seconds left to win the bout.

Jasinski, now 27-2 on the year, defeated Christian Salera of Johns Hopkins in his opening bout by fall in 2:00. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Joe Bartolini of Centenary (N.J.) 20-8. In the semifinals, he beat Matthew DiGiovanni of New York University, 13-5.

Facing Antonio Mancella of The College of New Jersey in the finals, he took a 2-0 lead after the first period after a takedown with 44 seconds left in the period. He got an escape early in the second period for a 3-0 lead, then got an escape with 1:36 left in the third for the 4-2 final margin. Jasinski will be looking to earn his second straight All-American status, as he earned his first last year in Iowa.

Manganaro won his first match via tiebreaker over Evan Johnson of Johns Hopkins, 2-1, then defeated Dan Wojtaszek of TCNJ 11-7 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, be beat Phil Woods of Stevens 3-2, before falling in overtime to Patrick Sheehan of New York University 9-4.

Peleg started his day with a pin over Ellis Flannery of Johns Hopkins in 4:26, then beat David Oberrender of Wilkes in the quarterfinals, 5-0. In the semifinals, he lost to Zach Roseberry of Delaware Valley, 3-2.

In the wrestlebacks, he beat Tate Dulany of Ferrum by pin in 39 seconds before taking out Oberrender again in the third place bout 2-0.

Two other wrestlers earned placements, as freshman Christopher Tan (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) (125) and junior Keven Hoogheem (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) (133) each finished fifth.

The NCAA Championships, hosted by Elizabethtown College at GIANT Center in Hershey, are scheduled to begin on Friday, March 13.
