HOBOKEN, N.J. – Wrestling their fourth and fifth dual in the last two days, the Ursinus College wrestling team dropped two matches as they lost to 28th-ranked New York University 23-16, and Stevens 31-28 in two tightly contested matches on Sunday.
The Bears, ranked 21st in Division III, saw the two duals come down to the final three matches.
Starting off with New York University, the Bears saw New York Universitw win the final two bouts to take the dual. Ursinus started with a win at 125 as Christopher Tan defeated Jacob Donato, 3-2 before Keven Hoogheem lost to Nathan Pike 11-4 to tie the score at 3-all.
After Ursinus went down 7-3, the Bears won the next three bouts as Derek Arnold scored a technical fall over Matthew Coppola, 17-1, before Richie Jasinski won at 157 over Matt DiGiovanni 18-3 in seven minutes.
New York would win the next two, before Ursinus took a 16-13 lead at 184 when Daniel Manganaro defeated Jon Guarino 9-2. A major decision win at 197, followed by a pin at heavyweight sealed the win for NYU.
Against Stevens, Ursinus went out to an 11-0 lead Christopher Donaldson got a pin at 125, followed by a technical fall for Keven Hoogheem at 133 17-1 in 2:53.
Stevens got a major decision win at 141, before Derek Arnold picked up a major decision win at 149 to give Ursinus a 15-4 lead. Stevens won the next three, to take a 19-15 lead. Ursinus got back within one at 19-18 when Manganaro picked up an overtime victory at 184 by a 3-1 score.
The Ducks then got two pins at 197 and 285 to take the match.
Ursinus will travel to Gettysburg to take on the Bullets and Johns Hopkins in their final dual on Saturday afternoon.
