Wrestling competes in two states over Holiday Break

The Ursinus College wrestling team was busy over the holiday break, as wrestlers took part in two tournaments in two different states. Sophomore Derek Arnold (Centrevilla, Va./Westfield) won the Wilkes Open at the 149 pound bracket, beating four Division I wrestlers, while the rest of the team took eighth at the Citrus Open in Florida.

Arnold, the lone Ursinus wrestler in the tournament, won his bracket at 149 pounds. He started the day by beating Michael Underwood of Rutgers by a 7-2 decision, then beat fellow Centennial wrestler Darryl Albonico of New York University 3-2. In the quarters, he defeated Baby Bannister of Maryland by an 8-6 decision before knocking off Jimmy Morris of Rider 4-2.

In the finals, he defeated Danny Reed of Columbia by a 4-2 decision, defeating his fourth Division I wrestler of the day.

At the 2014 Citrus Open in sunny southern Florida, the Bears finished the two-day tournament with a score of 59 points. Mount Union was the top finisher with 167.5 points.

Senior Richard Jasinski (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) continues his great start, winning the 157 pound bracket with a perfect 3-0 record.

Going down the brackets, freshman Austin Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) finished fifth at 125, with his brother Anthony Petril finishing seventh at 133 pounds.

Sophomore Alexander Kramer (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) was fifth at 141 pounds, with junior junior Gnoleba Seri (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) finishing in seventh at 165 pounds.

Jasinski, seeded second, started his day with a pin of Jake Allen of Cornell College in 2:44, then defeated Jake Vincent of John Carroll 8-2. In the semifinals, he beat Tom McNulty of John Carroll 3-2, and in the championship, he bested top-seed Jon Garrison of Mount Union 4-1.

After a bye, Austin Petril beat James Gorman of Augsburg 3-2 before falling to Matt Matt Morris of Williams College 7-2.

In the wrestle backs, Petril beat Chris Cuccolo of Western New England 5-0, then beat Steven Lee of Oneonta State 7-1. In the consolation semis, he lost to Scott Smith of Cornell 12-5, before beating Gorman against 5-3 in the fifth place bout.

Kramer started his trip with a 7-0 win over Samuel Chalkley of Cornell 7-0, then defeated John Connick of John Carroll by a 2-1 score. After losing to Bryant Roby of Mount Union, 6-4, he fell into the wrestlebacks.

In the wrestlebacks, he beat Anthony Monterio of Western New England, 15-0, then beat Chalkley against by a 5-1 score. After falling to Aaran Gessic of Case Western Reserve, 2-0, he beat Kyle Ferguson of Mount Union by pin in 6:51.
