Wrestling seventh at Petrofes Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. – In its final tournament before the Holiday Break, the Ursinus College wrestling team finished seventh at the Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah College, finishing with a score of 71 points.

The Bears earned most of its points in the 157 pound bracket, as senior Richard Jasinski (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) won his weight class, with sophomore Derek Arnold (Centrevilla, Va./Westfield) finishing in second.

Ursinus picked up two fourth place finishes in the tournament as well, as senior Daniel Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads Regional) finished fourth at 184 and freshman Christopher Tan (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) was fourth at 125.

Finally, junior Keven Hoogheem (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) was sixth at 133 pounds.

Jasinski won his opening match over Tyler Miller of Messiah by pin in 2:01, then pinned James Gendler of Springfield in 1:19. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Stephen Turner of Wilkes by major decision 11-0, then defeated Michael Polizzi of Stevens 6-2. In the title bout, he won over Arnold by medical forfeit.

Arnold started his bracket by defeating Corey Palmer of West Virginia Tech via pin in 4:22. After defeating Sean Kelly by major decision 14-5, he shutout Sean Lombardi of Wilkes 6-0.

In the semifinals, he defeated Larry Cannon of Messiah 5-1.

Manganaro earned a bye, then defeated Logan Campbell of Mount Unioni 12-5. After a 5-3 win over Levi Veppert of Wilkes, he lost a close 3-2 decision to Phil Woods of Stevens.

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Ben Lebrun of Baldwin-Wallace 6-3, before losing to Ryan Aprahamian of UW-Whitewater by medical forfeit.

Tan started his day by defeating Trenton Gill of Mount Union 6-0, before being defeated by Jesse Hunter of Baldwin-Wallace by major decision 11-0.

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Andrew Gauthier of Bridgewater 6-2, then beat Denis Robles Gomez of West Virginia Tech by major decision, 19-7. After tech falling Chris Doyle of Baldwin-Wallace 16-1, he beat Tristian Bean of West Virginia Tech by pin in 2:32. He moved into the third place bout with a 3-1 win over Zac Denny of UW-Whitewater.

In the third place bout, he lost to Guesseppe Rea of Wilkes by major decision, 10-1.

Hoogheem lost his first bout to Ronny Hauser of UW-Whitewater by a 9-6 decision. In the wrestlebacks, he beat Matt Laux of Gettysburg 6-1, then beat Nick Montanye of McDaniel by a 10-2 major decision. After being his brother, Christian Hoogheem by medical forfeit, he lost to Matt Grossman of Wilkes 8-0.

In the fifth place bout, he lost to Michael Fleck of Wilkes, 6-1.
