Wrestling Wins Abele Invitational

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A total of 11 wrestlers earned places, including seven first-place finishers as Ursinus captured the team title at the 2014 Will Abele Invitational on Saturday afternoon hosted by the Bears.

The tournament, the final tune up before the Bears begin Centennial Conference dual action, saw Daniel Manganaro win the Danny Glover Outstanding Wrestler award for the best wrestler of the invite. The junior won three bouts, two by pin and one by tech fall. He captured the 184 bracket by defeating Levi Veppert of Wilkes by win in 2:40.

Senior Taylor Gload won the 197 bracket as he defeated Bryant Etherton of Wisconsin-Platteville in the title tilt 4-3. He went 3-0 in his bracket.

At 174, junior Robert Scarmuzza went 4-0, with two pins, and had a 9-2 decision over Chase Martino of Wilkes in the championship match.

Sophomore Anthony Carlo won the 165 bracket, going 4-0 with a major decision and a 8-7 win over Sonnieboy Blanco of W&J in the finals.

Junior Richie Jasinski won the 157 bracket, netting two technical falls and a major decision, 13-1 win over Stephen Turner of Wilkes in the championship.

Freshman Derek Arnold won at 149, netting a fall, a major decision and a 3-0 win over teammate and senior Curtis Watkins in the title bout. Watkins finished second overall.

Freshman Alex Kramer was first at the 141 bracket, beating senior Eli Gaylor in the finals by a 1-0 score.

Finally, the Bears picked up second and third at the 133 bracket as the brother duo of Christian Hoogheem and Keven Hoogheem (both sophomores) earned points. Christian lost to Sam Shames of MIT in the finals 6-0, while Keven won the third-place bout 4-3 over Matthew Evans of Wilkes.

Ursinus will host Merchant Marine and Gettysburg on Saturday in the first Centennial tri of the season.
