Blank eliminated from NCAA tournament

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Ursinus College senior wrestler Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) had a rollercoaster day at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships Friday.

Earlier in the morning, Blank was announced, along with teammate Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) as a NWCA Scholar All-American. Blank, is a two-time recipient of this honor which was awarded to a wrestler who carries a GPA better than 3.20 and meets one of three criteria: qualifying for the NCAA Championships, placing in the NCAA qualifying tournament or winning more than 66 percent of his matches.

Blank started his day in the tournament with the third-seed in the bracket, Adam Sheley of host Wisconsin-La Crosse. Sheley was able to score enough points in the first two periods to post a 15-0 tech fall win over Blank, sending him to the consolation bracket.

In the consolation bracket, Blank was matched up with Joseph Grippi of Springfield. Grippi, who came in at 28-3, scored an escape with 1:26 left in the second period to break a 0-0 tie and take the lead. He then added two more points with 1:20 remaining in the second to take a 3-0 lead after two.

Blank was unable to get any points in the final period, falling 3-0.

He finishes his career at 25-12.
