Wrestling second at Centennials

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team finished second on Saturday at the 2012 Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Gettysburg College with a team score of 73.5 points.

Senior 133 pounder Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) won the lone CC title for the Bears on the afternoon. Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) defeated Andrew Bohem of Stevens in the opening round 3-2, then scored a 3-2 win over Samuel Campbell of W&L to advance to the finals. In the title bout, he defeated Mike Tancredi of McDaniel 5-2. Blank also won the Chris Clifford Award, awarded to the wrestler with the most career points in the Centennial tournament.

At 125, freshman Chris Donaldson (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) finished second his bracket by defeating Matt Chess of Merchant Marine in the first round by fall in 3:42, then advancing to the finals with a 4-2 win over Mike O'Boyle of McDaniel.

In the title bout, he lost to top seed Paul Bewak of Johns Hopkins by pin at 5:35.

At 197, senior Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) finished second in his bracket. He won his opening bout via fall over Tyler Russell of Merchant Marine by pin in 2:58, then fell to Reid Mosquera of Johns Hopkins 11-8.

At 141, sophomore Elisha Gaylor (West Reading, Pa./Wyomissing) won third place in his bracket. He started off with a 12-4 over Conor Duffey of W&L, then fell to Michael Polizzi of Stevens 3-0. In the consolation semifinals, he defeated Bernard Watson of Merchant Marine 7-1, then bested Mason Goretsas in the consolation finals, 3-2.

At 157, freshman Richard Jasinski (Sellersville, Pa./Penn Ridge) took third as he pinned Samuel Friedfeld of New York University in his first bout via a pin in 4:18, then lost to Matt Fusaro of Johns Hopkins, 10-4.

In the consolation semis, he defeated Jake Odell of Stevens via pin in 3:48, then defeated Brent Lowe of McDaniel, 12-3.

At 184, freshman Daniel Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) finished second in his bracket starting with a 6-3 win over William Sharkey of Stevens, followed by a 3-1 decision over Jakub Pawlowski of NYU in the semifinals.

In the finals, he fell to Erik Schott of Merchant Marine, 2-0.

Finally, at 285, junior William Cornely (Cinnaminson, N.J./Camden Catholic) defeated Nicholas Pallotta of Muhlenberg 6-5 to start, then defeated Daniel Wilke of Merchant Marine 3-2. In the title bout, he lost Kevin Poplaski of Gettysburg 6-5.
