Wrestling nets four place winners at Petrofes

GRANTHAM, Pa. – A total of four wrestlers took spots in the top eight over the weekend at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational as Ursinus finished with a total of 55 points for ninth place.

The top place when to freshman Daniel Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) who finished fourth in his bracket at 184 pounds. He started the bracket with a 5-2 win over Erick Back of Wilkes, defeating Nicholas Camera of Springfield College. 3-2 to move into the semifinals.

In his semifinal bout, he fell to top-seed Andy Jenkins of Mount Union 4-1. In the wrestle backs, he defeated Seth Gray of Wilkes 3-2, before falling to William Parks of Cortland 6-5 in the third place bout.

Both senior Alex Blank (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and senior Connor McNamara (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) finished in sixth place in their respective brackets.

Blank started his day in the 133 bracket with a 9-0 major decision over Jared Lemke over Cortland, before falling to Myzar Mendona of Wilkes 11-1. In the wrestlebacks, Blank scored a 14-4 major decision over Andrew Rentzel, before defeating Matt DelGallo of Messiah by another major decision 18-7.

After falling to Mike Tancredi 8-7 in the wrestleback semifinals, he dropped a decision to Sean Kempf of Cortland via a pin in 44 seconds.

McNamara opened his day at 197 with a 5-3 win over Russ Jones of Messiah, before dispatching Jeremy Burns of Springfield 6-2. After falling to number one seed Jared Myhrberg of Cortland 4-0, he lost to Russ Korbul of Lycoming 4-3 in the wrestleback semifinals. He then lost to David Oberrender of Wilkes by medical forfeit in the fifth place bout.

Finally, junior William Cornely (Cinnaminson, N.J./Camden Catholic) had a great day at 285 as he won seventh place. He defeated Sam Batchelor of Lycoming 7-5, then lost in overtime to Corey James of Cortland via riding time after the score was tied at 3-all.

In the wrestlebacks, he defeated Nick Raicsak of Mount Union 3-1, before falling to Ricky Caruso of Bridgewater State 4-2. In the seventh place bout, he defeated John Gabordi of Springfield, 5-1.
