SEWANEE, Tenn. – Freshman Jill Verrelle recorded the first hat trick of her career, but the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team succumbed to an 18-8 defeat against Kenyon in the first of two spring-break games in Tennessee.

Senior Emily DiGiorgio added two goals and senior Kaci McNeave produced four assists for the Bears (0-5), who hit the Music City in search of their first win of the season. Ursinus, however, was unable to contain the Ladies' three-headed monster of Cassie Hudson-Heck (six goals, one assist), Avery Morgan (six goals), and Lucy Somers (three goals, four assists).

DiGiorgio got the Bears on the board first with an unassisted goal just under five minutes into the contest, but it was all Kenyon from there. The Ladies reeled off eight straight goals and held Ursinus off the board for almost the entire rest of the first half until McNeave facilitated back-to-back markers by Verrelle and Sherry inside the final three minutes of the frame.

Kenyon (5-2) picked up where it left off after the break, sandwiching a pair of three-goal spurts around a tally by Verrelle to go ahead 14-4 midway through the second stanza. Sophomore Hanna Crowley stopped the bleeding at the 11:54 mark, Verrelle plugged the back of the net less than a minute later with a free-position shot, and DiGiorgio scored despite being a player down with 6:54 remaining to make it 14-7. That was as close as Ursinus got, and the Ladies tacked on four more goals before the final whistle.

Sherry and senior Emily Blaszkow each registered four draw controls for the Bears, who doubled up Kenyon to the tune of an 18-9 surplus but could not take full advantage. Ursinus committed 26 turnovers to just 14 for the Ladies, who held a 34-19 edge in the shot department.

DiGiorgio finished with three draws, with McNeave and senior Courtney Cortese each causing a pair of turnovers.

Senior Kaitlyn France had six saves.

The Bears close out their trip with a matchup at Sewanee on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
