COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Swarthmore junior midfielder Annalise Penikis scored five goals and added in two assists as fifth-seeded Swarthmore (12-5) defeated fourth-seeded Ursinus (9-8) 11-10 on Wednesday night in the first round of the 2012 Centennial Conference playoffs.
The Garnet advance to the semifinal to face top-seed and defending national champion Gettysburg on Saturday.
Ursinus got three goals and an assist from freshman midfielder Kitty Dawson (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) while senior attack Emily Diehl (Lebanon, N.J./Voorhees) had two goals and an assist.
The Bears nearly pulled off an epic comeback, as they trailed by five with 16:09 left in the second game as the Garnet led 10-5.
Dawson scored on back-to-back goals, one a free position shot the other on an assist from Diehl to pull two within three at 10-7 with 13:44 left.
Junior attack Lauren Garganio (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) scored with 13:03 left in the game to pull the Bears within two at 10-8, followed by a goal from senior attack Kim Peifer (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) with 12:31 left to get within one at 10-9.
After a goal from Swarthmore's Annalise Mowry with 6:14 left, Ursinus got its final goal from Garganio on an assist from Dawson with 5:45 left.
The Bears did have the ball within the final minute, but, was called for an offside penalty with under a minute to play.
Individually, senior midfielder Alyssa Thren (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) had six draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Riley Pembroke (Great Falls, Va./Langley) had five ground balls and 13 saves in the loss.
