McGarrigle Runner-Up at CC Championship

McGarrigle Runner-Up at CC Championship

LANCASTER, Pa. – Emily McGarrigle turned in the best championship performance in program history to lead the Ursinus College women's golf team to fourth place at the Centennial Conference championship.

McGarrigle finished as the runner-up of the two-day tournament at Conestoga Country Club, the highest an Ursinus golfer has ever placed at the conference championship. The junior, who was tied for the lead after a first-round 79, carded an 88 on Day 2 to land six strokes behind Marymount's Alessandra Bertacche.

McGarrigle's two-day 167 is tied with classmate Rebecca Chiger for the lowest championship score in program history, and McGarrigle's second-place showing was three spots higher than Chiger's tie for fifth in 2016.

By finishing in the top five on the individual leaderboard, McGarrigle joined Chiger as the only all-conference performers in school history.

Ursinus dropped one spot from its Day 1 standing to land in fourth with a composite score of 758, the third-best total the team has registered at the CC championship. Gettysburg (714) ran away with its eighth straight conference crown, outdistancing second-place Dickinson (744) by 30 strokes. Marymount (750) was eight strokes clear of the Bears for third.

The fourth-place performance is tied for the second-best in program history, behind only a third-place effort in 2016. The Bears have fielded a full team at the conference meet seven times, including four consecutive years and six of the past seven.

McGarrigle, who fired Ursinus' best-ever championship round one day prior with a 9-over 70, got off to a bit of a rough start and found herself 11 strokes over par through the front nine. But she righted the ship with a par on No. 11 and a birdie on the 17th (par 4) to edge Gettysburg's Skylar Frankiewicz and Hannah Fireman by three shots for second.

Chiger, who tied for fifth in 2016 and was seventh a year ago, wound up tied for 13th with a cumulative 190 (94-96). The junior shot 51 on the front nine but recovered to make three pars and a pair of bogeys on the back.

Senior Sarah Thompson finished tied for 17th in the final event of her collegiate career. Thompson, who was 11th a year ago, carded a 96 on both days for a combined 192. She made pars on the 3rd, 5th, and 15th holes.

Senior Meaghan Corbin concluded a strong first collegiate golf season with a two-day 209 (104-105) and finished 25th overall. Corbin had five bogeys and a par on No. 11.

Another senior, Shelby Bryant, shaved three strokes off her first-round score to finish the round in 131 strokes, good for a combined 265 (134-131) and a 33rd-place finish. She bogeyed the 11th and 15th holes, both par 3's.
