Home Cooking: Women's Golf Wins Spring Invitational

ELVERSON, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's golf continued its historic spring season on Tuesday, running away with the title at its home invitational on the challenging Old Course at Stonewall Golf Club. The Bears recorded a team score of 372, outpacing second-place Muhlenberg by 43 strokes on the way to their second consecutive championship and third of the year.

Alvernia (417) was two shots behind Muhlenberg in third, followed by Neumann (506) and Arcadia (552).

Ursinus put forth half of the top eight scores on a course that played to all of its 6,047 yards. Neumann's Lauren Cusack claimed the individual crown with a 13-over 83, with Muhlenberg's Aine Filler finishing three strokes behind her in second. After that, the leaderboard was chock full of Bears.

Freshman Emily McGarrigle matched her lowest score of the spring with an 89, tying her for third with Alvernia's Emily Gilbert and registering the Bears' top score for the third straight outing.

Freshman Rebecca Chiger was just two strokes off McGarrigle's pace, carding a 91 to place fifth, while freshman Matison Leand and sophomore Sara Thompson notched matching rounds of 96 to tie for seventh.

Senior Rebecca Honor shot a 108, and junior Julia Senkevich logged a 114.

McGarrigle turned in a steady round on a difficult course, tallying 11 bogeys and four pars, while Chiger posted five pars and six bogeys.

Leand collected three pars, and Thompson paired two pars with a birdie on the par-3 17th.

The Bears have been remarkably consistent this spring, shooting between 371 and 379 at all five events to date. In addition to Tuesday's title, Ursinus claimed tournament crowns at the Muhlenberg Invitational last week and at the Alvernia Invitational last October – its first trophy in program history.

The women's golf team takes on Gettysburg in a dual match on Sunday, its final tune-up for the Centennial Conference championship, which will be held April 23-24 at Foxchase Golf Club.
