HAVERFORD, PA. - The Ursinus College Women's Basketball team was doomed by a late second half run from Haverford as they fell 60-48 to the Fords on Thursday evening in Centennial Conference action.
With the loss, the Bears drop to 2-11 overall and 2-6 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Fords improved to 9-5 overall and 6-4 in Centennial play. Freshman Chinwe Irondi led the Bears offense with a team-high of 18 points and 15 rebounds. Sarah DiLello and Maria D'Aulerio both added nine points for the Bears.
Ursinus fell behind early, trailing 7-0 after the first four minutes before Charlotte DiLello got the Bears on the board with a layup. After a D'Aulerio three-pointer, Charlotte DiLello tied the score at 9 with 1:52 remaining in the first. Cortlyn Morris gave the Fords an 11-9 lead to end the first quarter after knocking home two free throws.
In the second quarter, Kelly Grant cut the deficit to one after a three-pointer made the score 13-12 Haverford. Both teams would trade three-pointers before a block from Irondi led to a layup on the offensive end to tie the score at 18. Gia Flamini would convert two free throws to give the Fords a 20-18 lead with 3:34 remaining in the first half. Irondi would finish off the first half with a layup to tie the game at 20 a piece.
In the third quarter, Haverford jumped out to a 28-23 lead after Kayla Robinson collected an offensive rebound and finished strong for the five-point lead. After Sarah DiLello converted a free throw opportunity, the Fords knocked in back-to-back three-pointers to lead by 9 with 59 seconds left in the quarter. The Bears scored the next four points after a free throw and D'Aulerio connected on a three-pointer. Ursinus trailed 39-33 after three quarters.
Irondi got the scoring started in the fourth with a layup, assisted from Gabby Downs. Haverford answered with a jump of their own and after a block and two free throws they led 43-35. Irondi would cut the deficit to seven after converting on three of four free throws. With 2:48 remaining, Ally Landau would knock home a three-pointer for the Fords to stretch the lead to ten. Landau would score 12 of the final 13 points for the Fords as they as they collected their second consecutive victory.
The Bears will return to action Saturday as they host Johns Hopkins for a 12 o'clock tip inside Helfferich Hall.
