COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Despite a big night from three of its veteran stars, the Ursinus College women's basketball team dropped an 82-73 shootout to Albright in its season opener on Friday night.

Maya Kornfeld (23), Lydia Konstanzer (21), and Aliyah Stephens (19) combined for all but nine of the Bears' points on the night, but a dominant third quarter by the Lions was enough to separate them in a hard-fought offensive slugfest.

Albright led almost the entire night save for a nice closing run to end the first half by the Bears. Trailing by as many as 11 points in the first quarter and by eight midway through the second, Konstanzer and Marisa Morano led the home side on a stirring rally.

Morano completed an old-fashioned three-point play and, following a Lions basket, Konstanzer sandwiched a pair of layups around another bucket by Morano to trim the Albright lead to 31-30. Just before the break, Stephens snatched a rebound and fed ahead to Konstanzer for the go-ahead bucket, capping a 6-0 run and sending the Bears into the locker room with a 36-35 edge.

Gabby Downs netted the opening points of the second half, but it was all Lions after that. The visitors reeled off a 10-1 spurt to grab a 45-39 lead, then used another 12-2 burst to stretch their margin to 59-45 with 2:50 to go in the third.

Ursinus got within nine on a few occasions in the fourth quarter, but was unable to draw any closer.

Brady Wassel and Dejah Terrell tallied 22 points apiece for the Lions, while Hailey Dayton chipped in 13 and Gabby Boggs paired 15 rebounds with eight points.

Konstanzer was a force on the interior, putting up 14 rebounds to go with her 21 points for a double-double. Kornfeld was 6-for-10 from the floor and made 11 of 14 at the foul line for her game high, also recording a team-high four assists, while Stephens added four rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals to her stat line.

The Bears shot a higher percentage from the field (41.9-39.5), but did not make a 3-pointer, while the Lions connected on seven treys and capitalized on 20 Ursinus turnovers to the tune of 22 points. The teams were level on the boards (46-46) in a contest that featured eight lead changes.

Margrett Brown and Erin Devine made their collegiate debuts, each grabbing three rebounds.

The Bears have a week off before taking on No. 3 Scranton, a 2019 Final Four participant, in the opener of a tip-off tournament at Gwynedd Mercy.
