Women's Basketball Gets Help After Senior Day Loss

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The third time was not the charm for the Ursinus College women's basketball team, but some last-minute magic has the Bears in the postseason for the first time in six years.

First-place Gettysburg spoiled Senior Day for the third straight season, but this time – unlike the previous two – it wasn't enough to keep the Bears out of the playoffs. Thanks to Muhlenberg's win over McDaniel, and Dickinson's win at Washington College, Ursinus grabbed the Centennial Conference's fifth and final playoff spot via a three-way tiebreaker with the Green Terror and Red Devils.

The Bears will travel to fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins for the first-round game on Tuesday.

For the third straight year, Ursinus (13-12, 10-10) had a chance to lock up a berth with a win over Gettysburg, but the Bears fell into a deep hole early and, despite some valiant rallies, was never able to cool down a Bullets squad that has won 13 straight games and will host the conference semifinals and championship next weekend.

Gettysburg (23-2, 19-1) made 10 of its first 11 shots, opening up a 23-9 lead on a 3-pointer by Kiera Cesareo with 2:14 to play in the first quarter. Senior Rachel Guy single-handedly brought the Bears back with seven unanswered points to close the frame, including a triple from the left corner just before the buzzer.

Ursinus got as close as 27-23 after a steal and layup by freshman Marisa Morano, but Emma Dorshimer drained a 3-pointer for Gettysburg as the visitors kept the Bears at arm's length long enough to take a 40-31 lead into the break.

Dorshimer opened the second half with another triple, and Ursinus was never able to get closer than eight.

Reigning CC Player of the Year Emily Gibbons went off for 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting and added nine rebounds to lead the Orange and Blue, which got 17 points from Ashley Gehrin and 12 more from Dorshimer, all on 3s.

Gettysburg shot 55.8 percent for the day (29 of 52), went 7 for 13 from 3-point range, and held a 35-23 advantage on the glass.

Sophomore Lydia Konstanzer had 18 of her team-high 22 points in the second half for Ursinus, making nine of her 13 field-goal attempts and adding three steals. Freshman Aliyah Stephens had 15 points, and Guy produced nine in her final home game.

Liana Weishaar made her first career start on Senior Day and finished with one rebound in five minutes of action.

After making three of their first five from downtown, the Bears missed their final 13 3-point tries.
