Women's Basketball beats Swarthmore, 68-58

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – With the Bears needing every win possible to keep its playoff chances alive, the Ursinus College women's basketball team notched a key 68-58 win over Swarthmore at home on Wednesday night at Helfferich Hall.

The Bears (8-11, 5-8 Centennial) put four players in double figures led by 15 points each from sophomore guard Alyssa Polimeni and sophomore forward Caroline Shimrock. Sophomore forward Jessica Porada had 13 points and game-high ten rebounds, with senior guard Diamond Lewis scoring 11.

For Swarthmore, the Garnet got a game-high 26 points from Katie Lytle and 23 points from Ell Larsen.

Swarthmore started off the game with a 11-6 lead when Lytle made a three-point play with 15:03 to go. The Garnet would maintain the lead until freshman forward Libby Lannon made a layup with 7:03 left to tie the score at 20-all.

Lewis' three-pointer with 6:14 left gave the Bears its first lead since the opening tip at 23-20. Another three-pointer by Shimrock, this time with 4:31 left, gave the Bears a six-point lead at 28-22 with 4:31 left.

Swarthmore would rally to within one, and take a short 32-31 lead with 29 seconds left in the half before two foul shots by Lewis with ten seconds left gave the Bears a 33-32 halftime edge.

In the second half, Ursinus scored the first eight points to go up 41-32 on Shimrock's jump shot with 17:35. From there, Swarthmore would get to within one but could not retake the lead.

Lannon finished with six steals for Ursinus, with Lewis getting five assists.

Ursinus heads to Dickinson on Saturday.
