Comfort Tosses Gem as Softball Stops Scranton

CLERMONT, Fla. – A dominant outing from Morgan Comfort led the Ursinus College softball team to an impressive win over Scranton in the opener of Wednesday's twin bill, but the Bears were unable to get the bats going in a 4-1 loss to Mount St. Joseph and settled for a split for the third consecutive day.

Comfort went the distance and did not allow an earned run to headline a 7-1 defeat of the Royals, while five different Ursinus hitters registered an RBI in a balanced offensive attack. The Bears were limited to just four hits in the nightcap.

Game 1: Ursinus 7, Scranton 1

The Bears trailed 1-0 after a first-inning run by Scranton but wasted no time getting it back and then some. Back-to-back errors paved the way for a couple of unearned runs to cross in the second, which freshman Mackenzie Brennan capped with a two-out RBI single to give Ursinus the lead for good.

The teams traded goose eggs until the fifth, when sophomore Heather Lazer was hit by a pitch to kick-start a three-run outburst. Senior Samantha Garritano followed with a single, and Comfort's base knock brought home two runs for a 4-1 lead. Senior Kayla Quinn came through with a two-out RBI single to make it 5-1.

Garritano's sacrifice fly in the sixth and another Royals error in the seventh accounted for the final score.

Comfort allowed five hits and one unearned run to move to 2-0 on the season, striking out one and effectively pitching around four walks.

Sophomore Megan Hasulak led the Bears with two hits, while Comfort scored two runs and drove in another.

Game 2: Mt. St. Joseph 4, Ursinus 1

The Bears fell into another early hole, but this time were unable to dig themselves out.

The Lions jumped right on top with a pair of first-inning runs, which was answered in part by Lazer's RBI double in the bottom half.

That was all the offense Ursinus could muster against Sarah Miller, who allowed just three hits over six strong innings. The Bears had runners on second and third in the fourth, but failed to score and did not threaten again.

Junior Jennifer Hammons worked five innings, conceding four runs – three earned – on five hits. She walked four and struck out five, inducing a double play in the third.
