Softball closes season against Moravian

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – In its final doubleheader of the season, the Ursinus College softball team battled regionally-ranked Moravian before dropping both games. In the first game, the Bears and Greyhounds went to extra innings, before Moravian scored two in the eighth in a 2-1 win.

In game two, Moravian (30-4) defeated Ursinus (15-20) 7-1 by scoring four runs in the fifth inning.

After playing a scoreless regulation game, Moravian started the top of the eighth in game one with a runner on second due to the international tie breaker rule. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner over, Moravian put two on with two outs.

Second baseman Lizzie Mack hit a single just out of the reach of freshman shortstop Arastina Barry (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) scoring two runs and give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead.

Starting with a runner on second in the bottom of the eighth, freshman designated player Bridget Winay (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) singled to left to put runners on first and third with one out. Barry then singled up the middle to score junior pinch runner Shelby Edelson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) making the score 2-1. Moravian would retire the next two batters to end the game.

Ursinus got two hits from Barry and two from Winay in the first game, while junior pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) struck out three and walked four.

In game two, Ursinus tied the game at 1-all in the bottom of the first as Barry singled to start the inning and would later score on a RBI double by sophomore left fielder Casey Derella (Millville, N.J./Millville) with two outs.

Moravian would add one in the third and then pull away with four runs in the fifth inning.

For Ursinus, Barry had two hits in game two, while Heinke, Derella, Edelson, senior centerfielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) and freshmam third baseman Rachel Hyman (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) each had hits in game two.

Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Willis (Perryville, Md./Perryville) struck out three and walked three in taking the loss.

Ursinus finished the season by winning seven of their last nine, including two forfeit wins over Swarthmore.
