Sweeping on Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team earned a pair of wins on Saturday on Senior Day as the Bears defeated Penn State-Brandywine by scores of 10-1 and 2-0 to improve to 13-18 on the season. The Lions (17-10) were a late replacement for Saturday, as the Swarthmore doubleheader was cancelled on Friday.

As for Saturday's games, the Bears scored seven runs in the first two innings as the Bears held the Lions to just three hits. In the first inning, two errors contributed to four runs. Senior center fielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) hit a ball that went between the shortstop's legs allowing for two runs to score. Mercurio would later score on a RBI single by freshman second baseman Kaitlyn Willis (Perryville, Md./Perryville).

In the second, Ursinus put three on the board when freshman third baseman Rachel Hyman (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) hit a single scoring freshman shortstop Arastina Barry (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley). Hyman and senior first baseman Ellen Goldstein (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) would later score on a two-run single by Mercurio.

In the fifth, the Bears plated three more runs, including a two-run single by sophomore left fielder Casey Derella (Millville, N.J./Millville) which ended the game early due to the mercy rule.

Barry finished the game 4-for-4 with three runs scores, while Mercurio was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Junior pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Stewartsville) got the win, improving to 5-10. She struck out six and walked three while allowing just three hits.

In game two, Willis did the job as she scattered two hits and struck out nine. In the first, Goldstein scored on a wild pitch, while Mercurio tripled in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Shelby Edelson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove).

Willis also great defense behind her, as Goldstein made two over the fence catches in foul territory to end innings. Barry finished with two hits in the game.

Ursinus will host Immaculata on Monday, then Moravian on Tuesday to close out the season.
