Softball battles Washington College

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team battled Washington College in two tough games, before the Shorewomen (11-13, 6-6 Centennial) prevailed by scores of 6-0 and 6-3 on Thursday afternoon.

In game one, Ursinus (8-17, 0-12 Centennial) held the Shorewomen to three runs over the first six innings. Trailing 1-0 after the top of the fifth inning, Ursinus got a leadoff triple in the bottom of the inning from senior centerfielder Delia Mercurio. However, the Bears could not get her across.

In the seventh, Washington pushed across three runs to increase their lead to 6-0.

For Ursinus, Mercurio and senior first baseman Ellen Goldstein each had hits. Junior pitcher Zoe Heinke struck out two and allowed three earn runs in the circle in game one.

Game two started off great for the Bears, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first to go up 3-0. After freshman shortstop Arastina Barry singles, Goldstein bunted safely to put runners on first and second with no outs.

With two outs, Mercurio again came up big as she hit a two-run single to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. She would later score on a wild pitch.

Washington put two runs on the board in the top of the second inning to get within one at 3-2. Washington threatened in the top of the third by loading the bases, but, the Bears did not allow any runs with great defensive plays. On two straight at-bats, Barry threw out runners at home connecting with catcher Shelby Edelson.

The Shorewomen took the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs to go up 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Ursinus put two runners on with no outs but could not get any runners across.

Freshman third baseman Rachel Hyman had two hits in game two, while Barry finished with three hits in the nightcap.

Heinke struck out one and walked six, allowing four earned runs in game two.

Ursinus goes to Muhlenberg on Saturday.
