Softball opens at home with Gettysburg

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team finally got a break in the weather and opened its home schedule on Saturday against Gettysburg.

The Bullets (17-3, 6-0 Centennial) swept both games, with both going five innings, as Gettysburg won game on 17-2 and game two 9-1.

In the opener, Ursinus (6-11, 0-6 Centennial) led 2-1 after two innings before Gettysburg scored seven in the third and eight in the fifth inning.

In that second inning, junior designated player Meredith Watters (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) had a two-run double that scored junior catcher Shelby Edelson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and sophomore left fielder Casey Derella (Millville, N.J./Millville).

Watters, Derella, freshman third baseman Rachel Hyman (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) and senior centerfielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) each had hits in game one.

Junior pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Stewartsville) pitched three innings, allowing seven earned runs and struck out one.

In game two, Mercurio reached on a fielding error that allowed senior first baseman Ellen Goldstein (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) to score. Goldstein and freshman pitcher Bridget Winay (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) each had hits in game two.

Winay took the loss, going 4.2 innings. She struck out one and walked one and allowed seven runs, all of which were unearned.
