Softball stopped by Capital, 14-8

SALISBURY, Md. – In a see-saw affair, the Ursinus College softball team dropped a 14-8 decision to Capital University in a non-conference matchup at the Salisbury Tournament on Saturday.

The Bears (6-5) were scheduled to play another game versus Lynchburg, but, that game was halted in the fifth due to weather with Lynchburg up 6-5.

As for the Capital (8-3) game, the Bears did get 11 hits and scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead, before Capital scored four in the bottom of the frame and five more in the sixth.

Ursinus took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single by senior center fielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) that scored Arastina Barry.

The Bears got a run in the third when freshman second baseman Kaitlyn Willis (Perryville, Md./Perryville) homered to right center to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, sophomore left fielder Casey Derella (Millville, N.J./Millville) got a RBI on an error that scored freshman shortstop Samantha Ali (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), followed by two-run singles from junior catcher Shelby Edelson (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) and Willis. Derella would have a RBI single in the sixth.

Junior starting pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) would go 3-for-4, while Edelson and Willis would each have two hits.

Heinke took the loss, falling to 2-2. She struck out two and walked one while allowing six earned runs.
