Softball snaps skid with win over Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. – After dropping the opening game of a doubleheader with Immaculata, 3-2, Ursinus snapped a ten-game skid with a 15-3 win over the Mighty Macs (20-8) in five innings in a softball matchup on Tuesday.

Game one saw the Bears (8-22) take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior right fielder Caitlin Whelan doubled home sophomore pitcher Zoe Heinke with two outs in the inning. After Immaculata tied the score in the bottom of the inning, Ursinus went back up 2-1 in the sixth when freshman Danielle Beal scored on RBI single to right by junior Delia Mercurio.

The Mighty Macs then scored two in the bottom of the sixth to go up 3-2. Ursinus had two on with one out in the top of the seventh but grounded into a double play to end the game.

In game one, Mercurio, Heinke, Whelan, freshman Morgan Worthington, Beal and freshman Casey Derella all hit safely. Heinke took the loss in the circle, striking out three and walking three.

In game two, Ursinus scored four times in the first, six times in the second and five times in the third to take a commanding 15-3 lead.

In the first, Mercurio scored on an error, while junior Ellen Goldstein scored on a RBI ground out by sophomore Shelby Edelson. Heinke, who reached on the error, scored on error on an at-bat by Beal. Madison scored the fourth run of the inning on Beal's at bat.

In the second, the big hit was a RBI triple by Beal that scored Heinke, Whelan and Madison.

Heinke had a two-run double to left center in the inning.

In the five run third, Edelson had a two-run double, while Worthington and freshman Carly Gartenburg had RBI singles.

Edelson, Heinke and Beal all had three RBI in the win, while Worthington was 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Heinke got the win, striking out four and walking one.

Ursinus hosts Delaware Valley on Thursday.
